A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker from Madhya Pradesh on Friday (August 29, 2025) lodged a police complaint after his pictures were shared on social media to claim that he was the same person who has been arrested by the Bihar Police for allegedly abusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra

Anuppur Superintendent of Police Moti Ur Rahman told The Hindu that a defamation complaint has been received at Kotma police station from a man named Nek Mohammad Rizvi, alleging that his pictures sourced from his social media accounts have been used to connect him with the accused in Bihar incident.

While Mr. Nek Mohammad Rizvi is a resident and a BJP worker from Anuppur in Madhya Pradesh, one Mohammad Rizvi alias Raja was arrested by the Darbhanga district police in Bihar on Friday.

A resident of a village in Darbhanga, Mr. Raja is accused of using abusive language for Mr. Modi at an event during the Voter Adhikar Yatra in the Jale Assembly constituency in the district on August 27. Mr. Gandhi or any other senior leader from the Opposition Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) was not present during the incident.

In a video statement, Mr. Nek Mohammad Rizvi termed the social media posts a “conspiracy against him”.

“I have taken screenshots of as many posts as I could find on social media and given them to the police with my complaint. This is being done to tarnish mine as well as the BJP’s image,” he said.

Mr. Rahman said that the police have not filed an FIR in the matter as this is a civil defamation matter.

“But we will find out about the people who have used his pictures and gather their details if the complainant decides to file a civil suit,” he added.

Meanwhile, the remarks on Mr. Modi triggered a political storm in poll-bound Bihar as well as in other parts of the country. Several BJP and Congress workers also engaged in violent clashes near the latter’s State headquarters in Patna on Friday.

In a video statement share on the Congress official X handle, AICC national media coordinator Abhay Dubey also alleged that BJP workers “themselves abusing” Mr. Modi and making an issue out of it.

“Prime Minister Modi ji, workers of your political party are abusing him, then making it an issue, and then BJP’s goons attack our Sadaqat Ashram. They injure our workers,” he said, without sharing anyone’s picture.
