All talk, no walking the walk — that’s been Ferrari’s recent story in Formula 1.

And for the Tifosi hoping 2026 might finally bring a technical masterstroke, the early signs from Shanghai aren’t exactly encouraging.

Ferrari’s much-talked-about rotating rear-wing concept, quickly nicknamed the “Macarena" wing, lasted just a single practice session at the Chinese Grand Prix before being quietly shelved.

Radical Idea, Short-lived Run… For Now

The Scuderia trialled the unusual device during Friday’s sole practice session in Shanghai, marking its first appearance during a race weekend.

Ferrari’s innovation featured a rear-wing flap designed to rotate 180 degrees on its axis, effectively flipping orientation to optimise straight-line speed.

The unusual movement (hence, the “Macarena" nickname in the paddock) was meant to offer improved aerodynamic efficiency when the car switched to its low-drag mode.

But after gathering data in practice, Ferrari opted to remove the experimental wing ahead of sprint qualifying, hinting that the results weren’t quite what the team had hoped for.

Mixed Performance In Sprint Qualifying

Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton ran the upside-down-looking wing on their SF-26s during the opening hour of practice, eventually finishing fifth and sixth fastest.

Leclerc ended the session eight-tenths off the pace set by Mercedes’ George Russell, while Hamilton was 1.388 seconds adrift, with both Ferraris trailing the McLaren pair.

Unfortunately, the Sprint qualifying offered little relief.

Hamilton managed fourth on the grid, around four tenths quicker than his teammate, while Leclerc struggled with issues on his final SQ3 lap.

After the session, the Monegasque driver vented his frustration over team radio.

Speaking afterwards, Leclerc described it as “a very frustrating session."

“Unfortunately, when I had a good lap, I lost half a second on the back straight for whatever reason on the second lap in SQ3," he explained.

Hamilton admitted Ferrari may have rushed the innovation.

“We rushed it to get it here… it was not supposed to be on the car until race four or five," he said. “It was maybe a little bit premature, so we took it off."

For now, the Macarena wing has danced off stage.
