An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted at Godan police station in Madhya Pradesh’s Datia district died by suicide after accusing his seniors and a sand mafia of mental harassment.

The 51-year-old officer, Pramod Pavan, was found hanging in his official quarters inside the police station premises, said officials.

Before his death, ASI Pavan recorded and shared multiple videos, alleging mental harassment by senior colleagues and links between local police personnel and illegal gambling and sand mining operations.

He also alleged caste-based discrimination and threats to his life.

In the videos, ASI Pavan named Godan police station in-charge Arvind Singh Bhadauria, constable-driver Roop Narayan Yadav, and Tharet police station in-charge Anfasul Hasan, accusing them of mentally harassing him after he intercepted a tractor allegedly transporting illegally mined sand.

“I have been confined to the station, denied basic tasks like updating my ID documents, and subjected to casteist slurs. I’ve been threatened with death," he said in one video.

He also claimed that the illegal activities of sand mafia member Babloo Yadav continued with police protection.

Another video alleged that gambling operations were openly run in the area with the support of local police. Pavan claimed these dens were linked to several violent crimes, including the 2024 murder of Narendra Yadav.

“If call records of Constable Roop Narayan Yadav are investigated, key links to such crimes will emerge," he said.

Superintendent of Police Datia, Suraj Verma, confirmed the death and said a transparent probe has been initiated into the case.

“Given the seriousness of the allegations in the videos, the Deputy SP (AJK) has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation. Meanwhile, the officer in charge of Godan police station has been removed from his post and attached to police lines to ensure fairness."

The incident highlights ongoing concerns around illegal sand mining in the Gwalior-Chambal region, where several officials have previously lost their lives in confrontations with the mining mafia.

In past incidents, a deputy forest ranger and an IPS officer were killed in similar circumstances while acting against illegal mining.
