During a wedding ceremony in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district, the bride, groom and their family members were assaulted by guests, who were upset at not being served liquor, according to police.

On Tuesday night, while guests and family members were dining, a group of neighbours – identified as Manoj Jatav, Harnam, Bhim, and Naval Kishore Jatav – arrived at the groom’s residence in Patai village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Aron police station in rural Gwalior.

The groom’s mother, identified as Sheela, said some rituals were underway at her house after the arrival of the bride when a few neighbours arrived there, demanding money from her son for liquor. When she refused, the neighbours beat up her family members, including the groom.

When Jatav’s mother tried to intervene, the neighbours assaulted her, her husband, and the bride, as per her complaint. The accused also allegedly stole household items and money during the assault. Subsequently, guests present at the wedding also stepped in to stop the attackers, resulting in a physical clash between the two factions.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident. The cops received complaints from both the groom’s family and the neighbours, while the injured people underwent medical examination. CSP Yadav said the conflict began when a request for money to buy alcohol during the wedding celebrations was refused, which then escalated into a violent clash involving both the wedding party and nearby residents.
