The Tamil Nadu Science Forum organized an awareness "Garbage Walk" on Sunday morning in Madurai from the Thaikal Bridge to Anna Thoppu which was flagged off by T Nagarajan, the Deputy Mayor.
Madurai: Madurai corporation is taking steps to cancel contract with the private company that manages waste collection and disposal in the city, said deputy mayor T Nagarajan.“Many complaints have been made about the company. Since profits appear to be its main focus, service quality has suffered,” he said at an event in Madurai on Sunday. He later flagged off “Garbage Walk”, a march to create awareness on waste management, from the Thaikkal bridge to Mela Anna Thoppu. The walk was organised by the Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF).Speaking at the event earlier, the deputy mayor said public participation is essential to build a cleaner Madurai. Even though vehicles are deployed to collect garbage properly, some people still dump waste in public places.
Waste management infrastructure, staff, and vehicles will be increased in proportion to the city’s population, he said.He further stated that steps have been taken to implement projects that generate electricity as well as gas from waste and to treat and reuse wastewater.Kannan, TNSF’s district secretary, said personal discipline is the foundation of effective waste management. “Every individual must responsibly handle the waste generated in their homes and cultivate a habit of separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste before disposal,” he said.TNSF’s district president Antony Paul said similar events will be conducted in the city in future.
