Decommissioned railway coaches are recycled and converted into restaurants instead of being scrapped, promoting sustainable utilization of railway assets which are giving passengers and visitors a nostalgic railway dining experience. The Rail Coach Restaurant at Rameswaran was opened by Shri. Om Prakash Meena, Divisional Railway Manager, Madurai on Friday in the presence of Shri. D.L. Ganesh, Sr.Divisional Commercial Manager, Ms. D. Mohanapriya, Divisional Commercial Manager and other branch officers. Madurai: A rail coach restaurant (RCR), the first of its kind in the Madurai division of Southern Railway, was established at the Rameswaram railway station. The facility was inaugurated by Madurai divisional railway manager Om Prakash Meena on Friday.Decommissioned railway coaches are being recycled and converted into restaurants instead of being scrapped, promoting sustainable use of railway assets and giving passengers and visitors a nostalgic railway dining experience. The interiors are redesigned with comfortable seating, decorative lighting, wooden panelling, and themed ambience.The restaurant operates round the clock and provide various cuisines, snacks and beverages. Travellers can dine before boarding trains or order takeaway meals. The RCR prepares food through modernised base kitchens with CCTV monitoring and FSSAI-compliant food handling.At present, the rail coach restaurants operate at Chennai Central, Potheri, Trichy, Thanjavur and Coimbatore stations across Southern Railway.
