Guwahati proudly unveils the Maharaja Prithu flyover, a stunning 5.4km structure that has transformed the traffic landscape along Maniram Dewan Road. Unveiled by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, this vital connection bridges eastern and western Guwahati, heralding significant travel time reductions. Commuters are enjoying the newfound speed, with plans for under-flyover parking on the horizon, aiming to alleviate roadside chaos.
Guwahati: The newly inaugurated Maharaja Prithu flyover, connecting the Noonmati area to Ambari, was opened for vehicular movement on Saturday, providing relief to commuters travelling across one of the busiest stretches — the Maniram Dewan Road.
The flyover eases connectivity between the eastern and western parts of the city.Hailed as one of the longest flyovers in the city, the 5.4km long carriageway was inaugurated by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday. It was opened to the public, drawing visitors eager to experience and admire the new structure. The flyover intersects with the existing Anandaram Barua flyover in Chandmari. During the evening hours, several people were seen gathering at the newly formed rotary, taking leisure strolls and spending time around the new infrastructure.
“The flyover was reserved exclusively for pedestrians for a few days, but vehicle movement started on Saturday. This will also help reduce the travel time normally faced while plying on MRD Road,” said Bhaskar Mishra Bhagawati, an executive engineer at the Public Works Department (PWD), New Guwahati division.Constructed at over Rs 800 crore, the flyover is still undergoing minor works, including the construction of a parking space underneath the structure and the painting of the pillars.
According to a PWD engineer, the work is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed around the Bihu celebrations in April. Once completed, the space beneath the flyover will serve as an organised parking area, which is expected to help address roadside parking issues.Nabarun Nath, a resident of Chandrapur who works in the main city, said, “It was always difficult coming into the city as traffic jams were very common and often caused long delays. Driving during peak hours used to be particularly frustrating due to the heavy congestion on the roads. But the new flyover is truly a blessing. I reached Panbazar from Noonmati within 15 minutes.”The Maharaja Prithu flyover, named after the 13th-century Kamarupa ruler, is known for defeating Turko-Afghan invader Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1206.
