Maharashtra Day is celebrated every year on May 1 to mark the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960. After India became independent, the issue of state reorganisation based on language was gaining momentum.
It was through the Samyukta Maharashtra movement that the need for the state of Maharashtra was strongly felt.In conclusion, it was through this movement that the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960, was enacted, resulting in the bifurcation of Bombay State into Maharashtra and Gujarat on May 1, 1960. Bombay was made the capital city of Maharashtra. Thus began the journey of a new state.It is an event that carries immense cultural and sentimental significance for the inhabitants of Maharashtra.
Not only does the event celebrate the establishment of the state but also its culture, language and tradition. Maharashtra Day recognizes the efforts that went into the formation of Maharashtra and helps create a strong sense of unity among the people of the state. It is also a testament to Maharashtra's contributions to India's economy, culture, and society.CelebrationsThe day is celebrated in various forms throughout the state.
Cultural events and programs featuring traditional dance and music, such as Lavani dance, are held at various educational institutions.Events * Flag hoisting functions conducted in government organizations, educational institutions, and various other public places* The key event for this occasion is organized at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, where the Governor & Chief Minister perform the flag hoisting ceremony and deliver their addresses to the people* Police parade and march past demonstrating their efficiency and discipline* Cultural programs include Lavani Dance, folk songs, and other Marathi cultural shows* Paying tribute to the leaders who have contributed to the success of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement* Presentation of awards to winners for the various accomplishments of Maharashtra* Local programs organized at the city levels such as Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad, etc.Furthermore, there are many institutions that organize talks, contests, and exhibitions related to the historical and other accomplishments of Maharashtra. Awards are also awarded to people who make contributions in different walks of life. Although there are great celebrations on this occasion, there have been some instances where celebrations were scaled down owing to the vagaries of weather.
