The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a statewide crackdown on food safety violations, carrying out surprise inspections at dairy units, eateries and other food businesses.
During the special inspection drive on July 9, the FDA seized food products worth over Rs 57 lakh, including milk and dairy items, banned gutkha and pan masala, spices, bakery products and edible oils. The action was carried out across multiple locations in the state.
Dairy units, food businesses face action
The FDA inspected five milk and dairy product units during the drive and seized 2,252 kg/litres of stock valued at around Rs 1.62 lakh.
Substandard and adulterated milk products were seized and destroyed in Ahmednagar, Jalgaon and Latur. The licence of Gautam Dugdhalaya in Ghatkopar was also suspended for violations, including improper labelling, unhygienic storage conditions and failure to maintain required temperature standards.
The FDA also inspected 58 hotels, restaurants and roadside eateries across Maharashtra. Of these, 26 establishments were issued improvement notices, while four food business licences were suspended for violating food safety rules.
Gutkha, spices and edible oil seized
In a separate crackdown against banned pan masala and gutkha, the FDA registered eight FIRs, arrested 13 people and seized stock worth Rs 41.06 lakh.
The department also took action against unsafe spices, bakery products and edible oils, seizing around 12,886 kg of products valued at Rs 14.92 lakh.
At the APMC Spice Market in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, spices worth approximately Rs 7.76 lakh were seized. In Nanded, refined soybean oil sold under the ‘Saraswati Swadisht’ brand, valued at around Rs 3.53 lakh, was also seized.
Four hotels and bakery establishments in Dhule and Pune had their licences suspended for failing to comply with Food Safety and Standards regulations.
