The Maharashtra government has moved to address growing concerns over online gaming addiction among children, announcing the formation of a task force to study the issue and recommend corrective steps.

The matter was raised in the Legislative Council through a calling attention notice by members Niranjan Davkhare and Sanjay Kenekar. They flagged the impact of excessive mobile and online gaming on children’s mental health, academic performance and social behaviour.

Responding to the discussion, Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar said the government is taking the issue seriously. He informed the House that a task force was constituted on February 2, 2026. The panel includes parents, psychiatrists, counsellors, IT professionals, police officials and other experts. It has been asked to submit its report before the next legislative session. Shelar also announced that a joint committee of members from both Houses will be formed to examine the issue in detail and suggest broader policy measures.

The minister stressed that the problem goes beyond gaming and reflects a larger challenge of uncontrolled digital exposure. He called for greater “digital literacy" among parents so they can better guide their children in the online space. He also emphasised the need for a “digital diet"—a balanced and disciplined approach to screen time.

Shelar urged schools, parents’ associations and social organisations to conduct awareness drives to address the issue at the grassroots level. “Regulation alone is not enough. Awareness and responsible use are equally important," he indicated during the discussion. At the same time, the minister said the government is examining whether Mumbai can host a global e-sports event, while ensuring safeguards against addiction. He clarified that competitive gaming and unhealthy dependence are separate issues and must be treated differently.

With smartphones now a part of everyday life, the government’s move reflects an acknowledgement of a growing concern in many homes. The real challenge, as members pointed out, will be turning policy into meaningful change on the ground.
