Speaking at the launch held at Ravindra Natya Mandir, Mangal Prabhat Lodha called on citizens to make fuel saving part of daily life.
Natural oil and gas conservation is nothing less than national service, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said on Sunday as the state rolled out the Saksham 2025–26 campaign in Mumbai. Speaking at the launch held at Ravindra Natya Mandir, Lodha called on citizens to make fuel saving part of daily life. He said the success of the campaign depends on public participation and small personal efforts. Linking the initiative to India’s long-term growth goals, he said energy conservation plays a key role in building a strong and self-reliant nation. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Developed India 2047, Lodha said conserving oil and gas is central to that roadmap. “Saving fuel also means moving towards green energy. It is our shared responsibility. Even simple steps can create lasting change," he said.
The Saksham campaign is being organised under the guidance of the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, with support from the Maharashtra government and oil industry partners. Lodha said reducing fossil fuel wastage helps protect foreign exchange reserves and also cuts greenhouse gas emissions. “Energy demand is rising across the world. Today, global politics often revolves around oil. When we conserve fuel, we strengthen India’s economy," he said.
He also encouraged people to use public transport wherever possible and adopt fuel-efficient driving habits. Highlighting the state’s policy direction, Lodha said Maharashtra, under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is giving strong priority to green energy. He stressed the need to introduce fuel conservation at the school level so children grow up with responsible habits. “One person’s effort may look small, but together it becomes powerful," he added.
State-level Petroleum and Natural Gas Coordinator Umesh Kulkarni said Saksham 2025–26 will be observed nationwide from February 1 to 15 under the theme “Conserve Oil & Gas, Go Green." The fortnight-long programme will feature debates and group discussions for school and college students, wall art and graffiti contests, fuel-efficient driving competitions, essay writing, and television and radio panel discussions. The outreach will extend to LPG users, drivers, farmers, industrial workers, housing societies, gram panchayats and NGOs. The focus will be on spreading awareness about fuel-saving technologies and sustainable practices at the community level.
Senior officials from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited and GAIL (India) Limited attended the launch along with students, fuel distributors and state coordination teams. The programme also included a fuel conservation pledge led by senior official Deepak Wagh, while a street play on energy saving was presented by Myra Foundation.
