A mahout at the Theppakadu Elephant Camp in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) was injured after being attacked by a captive elephant on Friday evening.

The victim of the attack was identified as Bomman, a mahout in-charge of the elephant known as Masini.

Masini was brought back to the tiger reserve after years of mistreatment as a temple elephant, leading to it sustaining life-long injuries and medical conditions.

When contacted, Forest Department officials said that Bomman is believed to have suffered a fractured hand. He has been referred to Government Medical College and Hospital for further checks and treatment, they added.
