While hearing the case over the illegal felling of trees in Delhi’s Ridge area, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said that the majesty of law is supreme and contempt is required by the constitutional framework.
The Supreme Court was pronouncing the judgment in the contempt case against the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for tree-felling in Delhi’s Ridge area for a road-widening project to provide transportation to the CAPFIMS Paramilitary Hospital.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and NK Singh said the conduct of the respondents has been contemptuous and their act fell into the scope of criminal conduct. “The majesty of law is supreme and contempt is recognised by the constitutional framework. It is not subordinate to parliamentary legislation and is linked to judicial autonomy," said Justice Kant.
