Tuesday night’s slate of MLB action delivered historic milestones across three ballparks. Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber joined Ryan Howard in rare franchise territory with his 50th home run.
Over in the Bronx, Aaron Judge climbed past Yogi Berra on the New York Yankees’ all-time list. Meanwhile, New York Mets star Juan Soto added a surprising speed milestone to his growing legacy. Each moment reshaped a piece of baseball history.
Kyle Schwarber joins Ryan Howard in Phillies’ 50-homer club
Kyle Schwarber etched his place in Philadelphia Phillies history by belting his 50th homer of the season in a 9-3 victory over the New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park. The shot came in the seventh inning, a towering three-run blast off Justin Hagenman that crashed into the center-field pitch clock at 110.4 mph, traveling 437 feet.
The home run ended a 10-game drought since Schwarber’s record-tying four-homer explosion on August 28. The slugger admitted that the milestone meant more than just another number. “I remember my first year hitting 30 with the Cubs, and just being excited,” Schwarber said last week. “You know, coming into the big leagues, I felt like 30 was a big number. And then 40 — I remember my first 40-homer season here in 2022.”Ryan Howard remains the franchise leader with 58 in 2006, but Schwarber is now the only other Phillie to reach the half-century mark.
Schwarber acknowledged the accomplishment with a curtain call. “Thirty is a lot, 40 is a lot, 50 is a lot,” he said. “And then you see the guys who get to 60, and you’re just like ‘What the heck?’” With 17 games left, 60 isn’t entirely out of reach.
Aaron Judge passes Yogi Berra on Yankees’ home run leaderboard
In New York, Aaron Judge continued rewriting Yankees history by hitting his 359th career homer, a solo blast off Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize. The 412-foot shot vaulted Judge past Yogi Berra into sole possession of fifth place on the franchise’s all-time list.Judge, now with 44 home runs this season, reflected on the company he’s keeping. “The way Yogi played the game, what he meant to the pinstripes, you know how much it meant, being a New York Yankee, to him. I feel the same way. I’m honored to wear this jersey. So it’s pretty cool to be on that list,” Judge said.
The Yankees’ top four remain Babe Ruth (659), Mickey Mantle (536), Lou Gehrig (493), and Joe DiMaggio (361). Judge is only two away from passing DiMaggio and could realistically chase Mantle if his production holds.
Juan Soto delivers first 30-30 season of his career with Mets
Juan Soto added a surprising twist to his first year with the New York Mets. In the eighth inning against the Phillies, Soto swiped third base for his 30th steal of the season, giving him a 30-30 campaign to pair with his 38 home runs.
Soto had never stolen more than 12 bases in a season before. His previous career-high, set twice, pales in comparison to his efficiency this year. He has been caught stealing just three times, boasting a 90.6% success rate.Soto became only the fifth Mets player to reach 30-30, joining Darryl Strawberry, Howard Johnson, David Wright, and Francisco Lindor. With 17 games left, he could become the first in franchise history to post a 40-homer, 30-steal season.
