As the “jungle raj" returned in Bihar, as alleged by the opposition, after a series of murders, former chief minister Rabri Devi on Monday targeted CM Nitish Kumar over the law and order situation, saying he should hand over the top post to her son and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav.
RJD chief Lalu Yadav’s Rabri, who served as the chief minister of the state from 2000 to 2005, said crime has increased significantly in Bihar.
“The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that the whole country and the world are watching. Nitish Kumar should hand over the responsibility to her son," Rabri said.
Tejashwi had served as deputy chief minister of Bihar with Nitish as the CM during the two short stints of Mahagathbandhan.
The law and order of Bihar has dominated headlines this month after a back-to-back murders, including the killing of businessman Gopal Khemka and two local politicians. The most recent being the killing of an accused inside the hospital in Patna last week. A purported CCTV footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed five armed men entering the ICU of the hospital and opening fire at the accused.
Chirag Paswan, Nitish Kumar’s ally and Union Minister, had said that criminals are brazenly challenging the rule of law. “Rising incidents of crime ahead of the assembly polls are a matter of concern. Hope the administration will take solid and stringent measures to restore law and order," he said.
Paswan has personally targeted Nitish Kumar, who is also in charge of the home department.
Rabri Devi On Bihar SIR
Rabri Devi also questioned the Election Commission’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, saying names of people from Bihar are being deleted from the voter list ahead of the state assembly polls due later this year.
“Voter names are being removed, which is a wrong practice. Those whose names have been removed — they are not non-citizens of Bihar or India. These are people who have gone outside to earn a livelihood, over three crore such people. Yet their names have been cut from the voter list. This is wrong, and the Government of India is getting it done through the Election Commission…"
After 22 years, the EC is carrying out SIR in Bihar to weed out ineligible people from the electoral rolls and to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the list. It will also help remove duplicate entries of voters who have enrolled themselves in multiple places, according to the poll body. The opposition, however, has claimed that the exercise will disenfranchise crores of eligible people who fail to produce relevant documents.
