A case involving the abandonment of a newborn in Malaysia’s Terengganu province has taken a disturbing turn after police investigations revealed that the child was born out of an incestuous relationship between two underage siblings.

The incident came to light in the Besut district when a local resident found a newborn baby abandoned behind a house and alerted authorities. The infant was immediately taken to Besut Hospital for medical attention, police said.

As investigations progressed, police uncovered that the baby was delivered by a 16-year-old girl and that the father was her 14-year-old younger brother. According to investigators, the teenage girl allegedly gave birth in secret and later abandoned the newborn behind the house, reportedly due to fear and social stigma.

Besut district police chief Mohammad Sani Mohammad Saleh confirmed the findings, describing the incident as a grave violation of the law and a serious offence against the welfare and rights of a child. “This act goes against basic humanity and legal principles," he said.

Police have arrested the 14-year-old boy and obtained a court order to remand him for seven days to facilitate further questioning. Authorities said the remand is necessary to determine the full circumstances surrounding the relationship and the subsequent abandonment of the baby.

The case is being investigated under two provisions of the Penal Code. Section 317, which relates to the abandonment of a child, carries a maximum punishment of 7 years’ imprisonment. Investigators are also probing the case under Section 376B, which deals with incest and provides for a sentence of between 6 and 20 years in prison, along with whipping upon conviction.
