In a dramatic escalation of the decade-long conflict in the Sahel, gunmen launched a sweeping and apparently coordinated assault across Mali on Saturday. The attacks struck multiple locations in the capital, Bamako, and several key northern and central cities simultaneously. Mali’s army confirmed in a statement that “unidentified armed terrorist groups" targeted military barracks and strategic positions, sparking intense firefights that have left the nation on high alert.
Simultaneous Strikes in Bamako
Residents in Bamako were awoken shortly before 6 am by the sound of heavy weapons fire and loud explosions. Sustained gunfire was reported near the Modibo Keïta International Airport and an adjacent air base, as well as the Kati military camp, the primary base of the ruling junta located just outside the capital. Witnesses described a heavy military presence blocking off major roads, while helicopters were seen patrolling the skies over the city’s outskirts. The army has urged the population to remain calm, stating that its forces are currently “engaged in eliminating the attackers" within the capital’s perimeter.
Northern and Central Cities Under Fire
The scale of the offensive extended far beyond the capital, with reports of synchronised unrest in the central town of Sevare and the northern urban centres of Gao and Kidal. In Kidal, a Tuareg-led rebel alliance known as the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) claimed to have seized control of several neighbourhoods and military positions. A spokesperson for the FLA, Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, asserted on social media that their forces had moved decisively against government outposts. While these claims have not been independently verified, local residents reported intense gunfire and blasts continuing well into the late morning.
A Multilateral Security Crisis
Security sources suggest that the assault may involve a rare, multi-pronged effort between separatist rebels and jihadist groups. Four security officials noted that Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), the regional al-Qaeda affiliate, was also active in the day’s operations. This coordinated surge represents a significant challenge to the military leadership, which seized power in 2020 and 2021 with the promise of restoring national security.
The timing of the attacks is particularly sensitive as Mali continues to pivot its security strategy. The government of Assimi Goïta has increasingly relied on Russian security support while simultaneously exploring a potential intelligence-sharing deal with the United States. Today’s violence underscores the volatility of the region, where the collapse of previous peace deals has allowed both separatist and extremist insurgencies to re-emerge with lethal coordination.
