Man arrested for assaulting woman in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: A 29-year-old man was arrested on charges of assaulting a woman during a dispute over money near Ramanathapuram in Coimbatore on Sunday night.Police identified the accused as K Hariharasudhan, 29, of Sripathi Nagar.

The complainant is P Saranya, 33, of Sripathi Nagar. They are relatives. Saranya stated that her younger brother, Manikandan, borrowed Rs 9 lakh in 2020 using Hariharasudhan’s credit card and had not repaid it for four years, after which the amount rose to Rs 18 lakh. Saranya said she had sold her house and paid Rs 9.70 lakh toward the dues.Saranya alleged that she later paid Rs 3.50 lakh as an initial payment to buy car.

She gave the vehicle to Hariharasudhan on the condition that he would pay the monthly instalments for three years. She said he failed to pay the EMIs. When she went to his house on Sunday night to question him, an argument broke out. She alleged that he had abused her with obscene language and assaulted her in public.Based on her complaint, the Ramanathapuram police registered a case under sections 296(b), 117(2), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Hariharasudhan was remanded in judicial custody.
