Man Declared Dead Returns Home Days After Family Performs Last Rites In Jharkhand

In Jharkhands Khunti district, family performed last rites after misidentifying a body as missing man Vishram Munda, he later returned.

A family in Jharkhand’s Khunti district was shocked after a man they believed was dead returned home days after his last rites were performed.

Vishram Munda a 45 year old resident of Patratoli village had gone missing on May 10 after leaving home to attend a wedding. His family searched for him for several days but could not find him.

During the search police recovered an unidentified body from a drain. The family was informed and later reached Khunti Sadar Hospital where they identified the body as Munda’s.

“The body’s height build and face closely resembled Munda’s and the family members as well as the villagers took the body as that of the missing person" police said.

After legal formalities were completed the body was handed over to the family. The last rites were then carried out according to tribal customs and the body was buried.

Sub Divisional Police Officer SDPO Khunti Varun Rajak told PTI on Wednesday “A few days after the burial Munda suddenly arrived at his daughter’s rented house in Khunti catching his relatives by surprise. He told his family members that he had gone to Ramgarh without informing anyone."

Police said Munda had travelled nearly 70 kilometres away to Ramgarh during the time he was missing.

After his return authorities began the process of exhuming the buried body to confirm the identity of the deceased through a DNA test.

Police are now trying to find out who the unidentified person was and how the mistaken identification happened.
