Relatives and neighbours gathered at the house of Satish Shinde, who, along with his wife, daughter and son, died of electrocution
Kolhapur: Four members of a Pardhi family were electrocuted after coming in contact with a live metal cable in Satara’s Phaltan tehsil on Wednesday morning, with initial investigations indicating that an overhead power line had electrified the wire during strong winds. The deceased have been identified as Satish, alias Pisurdya Shinde (45), his wife Gangubai (40), son Sachin (26) and daughter Arti (24). The family had been living in a tin shed near a school in the village for the past year and working as daily wagers.“Satish Shinde came in contact with a thin metal wire used to support a TV cable after stepping out of his house. Due to strong winds, an overhead power line had touched the cable support wire, making it live.
Hearing his cries, his wife, son and daughter rushed to help him, but were also jolted. His daughter-in-law managed to push the wire away using a wooden stick. We are investigating whether the incident was caused by natural factors or negligence and have sought the opinion of electrical experts,” said Dhanyakumar Godase, the sub-divisional police officer, Phaltan. The four were taken to the civil hospital in Phaltan, where doctors declared them dead before arrival.
The cause of death has been recorded as electric shock. The incident triggered demands for a thorough probe into the circumstances leading to the electrocution.Satara guardian minister Shambhuraj Desai, speaking in Mumbai, said, “All our officers went immediately to the incident spot. I have asked the superintendent of police to find out the exact reason for this untoward incident, and submit a report.”NCP (SP) state president Shashikant Shinde called for accountability and a wider review of electrical safety infrastructure. “The administration must conduct a thorough inquiry into this tragic incident, as well as hold the officials and staffers, who were negligent in their duties accountable. The MSEDCL must carry out a safety inspection of the entire system to ensure such accidents do not recur. I also appeal to people to stay away from electric wires, poles and exposed connections and take appropriate precautions during monsoon,” he said.
