A man’s unusual protest against pollution in the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura has gone viral on social media after he entered a drain near the river dressed as a cockroach as a symbolic demonstration aimed at highlighting the importance of improved sanitation and water treatment.

Social activist Deepak Sharma, who made headlines by reaching the Mathura municipal corporation dressed as a cockroach to highlight the issue of Yamuna pollution, donned the costume again and was seen entering a dirty drain near the river to show how untreated waste was flowing in the water and impacting the lives of millions.

Sharma was seen dancing and singing in the drain near the municipal corporation office along the banks of the Yamuna, urging local authorities to take action to clean the river and prevent further pollution.

On Friday, Sharma reached the municipal corporation office dressed as a cockroach and was seen singing and dancing outside the premises. He said he was compelled to dress as a cockroach to open the eyes of “incompetent" officials towards Yamuna and the rampant filth in the city.

“We, the residents of Braj, perform the ‘aachaman’ ritual of sipping water from the Yamuna. Yet, despite years of promises to rid the river of pollution, nothing has been done. Be it Mathura or Vrindavan, polluted water and sewage from filthy drains can be seen flowing openly into the river. Yet, the officials remain indifferent, turning a blind eye to the situation," Sharma said.

He also urged the public to join him in filing FIRs against the officials who, instead of upholding the rules, were violating them.

The incident gained traction after the launch of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical collective by political communication strategist Abhijeet Dipke. The platform surfaced last week following a controversy over remarks attributed to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant about “cockroaches" and “parasites" during a court hearing on the ‘senior’ designation for a lawyer.
