A man allegedly tortured his two minor daughters on suspicion of theft, resulting in the death of one child and leaving the other critically injured in Maharashtra’s Sangli.

The accused, identified as Dadu Haibat Yamgar, allegedly tied the hands and legs of his daughters, 10-year-old Sanika and 11-year-old Anuja, and hung them upside down from an iron angle inside their house at around 5 pm on Wednesday.

According to the police, the girls remained suspended through the night, crying in pain and repeatedly asking for water, which they were denied.

The ordeal ended the next morning at around 6 am when their grandfather untied them. By that time, Sanika had died, while Anuja was found unconscious with serious injuries, India Today reported.

Anuja was rushed to a hospital where she later regained consciousness and recounted the incident to doctors, leading to the registration of a police complaint.

Sanika was declared dead on arrival at a private hospital. Preliminary information suggests that neighbours had earlier suspected the girls of theft, which allegedly prompted the father to carry out the punishment.

In another development, family members allegedly tried to perform Sanika’s last rites quietly in an attempt to keep the incident from coming to light. However, the truth surfaced after Anuja gave her statement.

It has also emerged that the accused allegedly attacked the girls’ grandfather, who had freed them, with a sharp weapon and issued death threats.

Police have taken the accused father into custody and have launched a detailed investigation into the case.
