A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his four-year-old stepdaughter and disposing of her body in the Arabian Sea, Mumbai police said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Imran Shaikh, was taken into custody after the child’s body was discovered floating near Sassoon Dock in south Mumbai by Colaba police earlier in the day.
The girl had reportedly gone missing from the Antop Hill area in central Mumbai, according to an official. Following her disappearance, Shaikh and his wife, Nazia, who is employed as a domestic worker, filed a missing persons complaint at the Antop Hill Police Station.
A kidnapping case was initially registered against an unknown person.
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from Antop Hill and surrounding areas, which showed the child last seen with Shaikh. This led police to focus on his movements and raised suspicions about his involvement.
After the body was recovered, Shaikh was detained for questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to strangling the child and dumping her body into the sea, the official said.
The girl was allegedly killed by her stepfather in a fit of rage, reportedly because her presence was interfering with his time alone with his wife.
The child was also said to have been playing on a mobile phone late at night, which further angered the accused, leading to the fatal act.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
