Manchester United square up against Tottenham on Saturday in their upcoming Premier League encounter as Michael Carrick’s men look to secure a UEFA Champions League berth. United have experienced an uptick in form since the arrival of former midfield maestro Carrick as the caretaker, with three wins on the trot that has helped the club climb to fourth place in the PL table.
Carrick, who played for United between 2006 and 2018 arrived at the club after a brief spell at Tottenham, and the midfield maestro will return to face the Spurs in a different capacity, however.
“We’re in a good place and the boys have worked well again this week. Again, feet on the ground, let’s not get carried away with what has gone on. It’s about what’s next again," Carrick said.
“I’ve got really fond memories of Tottenham and being at the club. I was there for only a short time when you look back, but I really enjoyed it."
“Good team, Martin Jol was the manager and there was a lot of things I learned at the club in that short period of time," the United caretaker continued.
“But, I’ve said it enough times, coming here to United was a jump and a big jump at the time. I certainly felt that pretty quickly and then I think once you step inside this place as a footballer, it turns you."
“So, pretty much from the first day walking into the dressing room and meeting the manager, from then on in that was me," the 44-year-old said.
Spurs boss Thomas Frank expressed his admiration of Carrick’s efforts to energize and reinvigorate the United team that looked a far-cry from their current form under former boss Ruben Amorim.
“I think Carrick has had a great start. It seems like there was injected a little bit of energy into the team. I think it looks like some of the players are in a good place.
“We know the threats they pose before from Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes is getting this team ticking. He has done that the last, I don’t know, four or five years. It has been incredible.
“It is a threat, it is a challenge, but we are looking forward to it," the Dane added.
