Manchester United youngster Jack Fletcher has been handed a six-match suspension after admitting to using discriminatory language during an EFL Trophy clash with Barnsley in October.

The 18-year-old midfielder, son of club legend Darren Fletcher, accepted a Football Association charge for breaching rules by “using insulting words including a reference, whether express or implied, to sexual orientation."

Fletcher was shown a straight red card after saying to an opponent: “You seem to know a lot about me, are you a gay boy?" The referee, positioned just yards away, heard the comment during a heated verbal exchange.

Apology and Sanctions

Disciplinary documents reveal Fletcher told officials he had been subjected to off-the-ball fouls and remarks about his family before reacting. However, he did not dispute what he said.

In a statement, Fletcher apologised:

“I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment. Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game. I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values."

Alongside the six-game ban — three of which have already been served — Fletcher has been fined £1,500 and ordered to complete an FA education programme by June 2. Failure to do so could result in further suspension.

United added:

“Manchester United has worked with Jack to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language, and why it is harmful.

In addition to his ongoing participation in regular Academy programmes on diversity and inclusion, Jack will also take part in educational training through the FA."

Early Career at a Crossroads

Fletcher has made three Premier League appearances this season, debuting against Aston Villa and featuring against Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
