A groundbreaking medical procedure has been reported from Nagpur, where a young man has been given a new lease of life after losing his penis to cancer eight years ago. In a remarkable feat, doctors at Lata Mangeshkar Hospital successfully reconstructed his entire penis in a single, 10-hour operation, making it fully functional.
The complex surgery, hailed as the first of its kind in central India, involved the transplant of skin and muscle from the patient’s hand to create a new penis, which was then attached to the pubic area.
How Was The Penis Reconstructed?
The surgery involved reconnecting complex body structures—ensuring proper blood flow, restoring nerve sensitivity, and building a functional organ. Tiny veins and nerves were meticulously joined in a 10-hour-long procedure.
What Is Microvascular Surgery?
In microvascular surgery, tissue or bone is taken from one part of the body and transplanted to another, with the blood supply carefully reconnected. If all connections are successful, the transplanted organ or tissue begins functioning normally. This technique is now widely used not only in cancer surgeries but also in plastic, orthopedic, dental, and nerve surgeries.
Advanced Reconstructive Surgery At Lata Mangeshkar Hospital
Lata Mangeshkar Hospital in Nagpur is equipped with an advanced surgical microscope essential for complex procedures like microvascular penile reconstruction. This technology is a significant advancement for cancer patients, those with genital injuries from accidents, and individuals seeking penile restoration.
Hospital Dean Dr. Sajal Mitra congratulated the team behind this remarkable surgery, which included Dr. Jitendra Mehta, Dr. Sameer Mahakalkar, Dr. Ashwini Panditrao, Dr. Dev Patel, Dr. Abhiram Mundle, Dr. Kanwarbir, and Dr. Pallavi.
