Agra: A 60-year-old man from Chandigarh, who was accused of sexually assaulting minor girls across states and had escaped from Jalandhar prison in Feb this year, died on Tuesday afternoon after he was injured in a gunbattle with police in Muzaffarnagar.
Sub-inspector Ajay Gaur and constable Ankit were also hurt in the Monday night encounter, police said.According to police, Satpal alias Sattu was a criminal wanted in cases of murder, robbery, rape, extortion along with cases under Arms Act and Gangsters Act in at least four states and carried a Rs 25,000 reward. He had worked as a home guard in the past, police added.The brief encounter took place on Roorkee Road when a joint team of Civil Lines police and special operations group (SOG) were looking for Satpal in an alleged kidnapping case earlier this month in Muzaffarnagar.SSP Sanjay Kumar Verma said Satpal was a habitual offender with nearly 30 criminal cases against him, and police records revealed that he spent some years in Muzaffarnagar jail for various cases around 11 years ago and had recently fled from Jalandhar prison.SP (city) Amrit Jain said, “On the run, Satpal was involved in the sexual assault of several girls. He was wanted by police in UP, Chandigarh and other areas. His alleged links with the Chhota Rajan gang are also being investigated.”
On June 19, a case of kidnapping of a young woman was registered in Muzaffarnagar. During the investigation, police received intelligence inputs of Satpal’s involvement. According to police, he used to kidnap vulnerable homeless girls and rape them in forests, hotels and cafes. In UP, he was largely active in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Saharanpur districts.To apprehend him in the latest case of kidnapping, 10 police teams were deployed under the supervision of SP city and CO city, along with cops from Civil Lines, SOG and surveillance unit. The kidnapped young woman was rescued safely.
