Rudransh stands out as it reveals India's untold history backed by evidence

As Indian cinema prepares for a new wave of large-scale historical dramas set in the 17th century, filmmaker Mandarr Kaadam's upcoming feature Rudransh: Legacy of a Great King is positioning itself with a distinct focus—bringing lesser-known chapters of Maratha history to the big screen through extensive historical research and documented sources.Directed and produced by Mandarr Kaadam under the banner OthBrok Production, Rudransh has reportedly undergone five years of research and development before entering production. According to the filmmakers, the project draws from manuscripts, regional records, royal correspondence, battlefield references and oral histories in an effort to present an authentic historical narrative. The research also extended well beyond India.

Kaadam travelled across European countries, including Portugal and France, studying archival records and collecting previously unseen evidence connected to the Maratha era, material that the makers say has opened up entirely new chapters that Indian cinema has never touched. The five-year development window is itself unusual for the genre. Most Indian historical films move from announcement to release within one to two years.

By contrast, the research for Rudransh reportedly began well before the current surge of interest in Maratha-era storytelling took shape, and stretched from archives in Maharashtra to historical records in Europe, placing the project ahead of the wave rather than following it.

The team behind the pan-India film

Unlike many historical films that focus on well-known events, Rudransh aims to explore lesser-known aspects of the Maratha era. The film is inspired by the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, bringing both historical figures into a single cinematic narrative. That dual focus is a point of distinction in itself. Period films have traditionally centred on a single historical figure, with separate projects dedicated to individual kings, warriors or battles. By exploring the continuity between founder and inheritor within one narrative, the makers say Rudransh required a broader research scope and a longer development arc than a film built around one figure alone.Speaking about the project, Kaadam has emphasized the importance of research-driven storytelling and historical authenticity.

Industry observers believe the film's emphasis on unexplored historical material could help it stand apart in an increasingly crowded historical genre."A historical film is not ready when the sets are built," Kaadam says. "It is ready when every scene can defend itself against the record. We took five years to reach that point. That is the difference audiences will feel."The production is being mounted on a large scale and is planned for release in six languages—Marathi, Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam—followed by a wider international rollout.

Principal photography is expected to take place across Maharashtra and Angola, making it one of the few Maratha-era films to include an international shooting schedule. The international rollout is expected to extend the film into multiple foreign languages beyond the six Indian releases, placing Rudransh among the widest language releases planned for an Indian historical film to date. The team has indicated that the Angola schedule will support specific visual and narrative requirements of the screenplay that domestic locations alone could not provide.Adding to the anticipation, Oscar and Grammy-winning singer Sukhwinder Singh has recorded the film's title track. The makers are expected to announce the lead cast and other key members of the creative team in the coming months. The casting is currently being kept under wraps, with the team confirming only that both the lead and antagonist roles are being filled by "industry-leading names." First-look material, the music album and additional creative team disclosures are expected to roll out alongside the casting announcements as the film moves through production. With production moving forward and a theatrical release targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, Rudransh: Legacy of a Great King joins a growing list of historical epics in development. However, its creators believe that the film's focus on lesser-known historical narratives and evidence-based storytelling could give it a unique place in the genre.
