After securing victory and retaining control of Maradu municipality in the local body elections, the United Democratic Front (UDF) is in the process of identifying nominees for the posts of chairperson and vice chairperson.

Two councillors — Ajita Nandakumar and Suneela Siby — have emerged as strong contenders for the post of chairperson.

A senior leader, Ms. Nandakumar has been active in the political milieu even before Maradu became a municipality. She had served as the municipal chairperson for a period of six months in 2015. She was the chairperson of the works standing committee from 2020 to 2023.

Ms. Siby, who won from Ward 17, Kundannoor, had served as municipal chairperson for two and a half years. She is at present the district president of the Mahila Congress.

One of the strong contenders for the post of vice chairperson is Jinson Peter, who is the Maradu block president of the Congress. Mr. Peter had served as the education standing committee chairman during 2010-2015. He served as councillor from 2015 to 2020. He won from Ward 18 (Moothedam) in the recent election.

The chairperson’s post this time is reserved for women.

Meanwhile, District Congress Committee president Muhammed Shiyas said no decision had been taken on the chairperson’s post.
