Star German footballer Marc-André Ter Stegen was barred from voting in Barcelona elections because he couldn’t update his club membership, according to reports. Ter Stegen was seen at the polling station but had to leave without casting his vote.
As per reports from ESPN and SPORT, Ter Stegen was ineligible to vote because he was not included in the club’s socios census. Only members validated during the census were permitted to cast a ballot.
Ter Stegen’s inability to vote did not impact the outcome, as Joan Laporta won the Barcelona presidential election by a landslide, bagging 68.18% of the vote, up from 54.28% in 2021 when he was first elected.
Laporta spoke after the results, calling it a resounding win that has made his team unstoppable.
“This is a resounding result and it gives us great strength. It makes us unstoppable. No one will stop us. Exciting years lie ahead. They will be the best of our lives," Laporta said.
“A club unique in the world, truly extraordinary. I want to make special mention of the members who came out to vote. It has been a celebration of democracy and civic spirit," Laporta added.
Ter Stegen is on loan at Girona FC after dropping down the pecking order at Barcelona FC. Since his January move, he has featured only twice, having suffered an injury after joining.
Meanwhile, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has questioned Ter Stegen’s chances of making the FIFA World Cup.
“It is obviously an extremely tragic situation for Marc; it would have been his turn now. That something so dramatic would come from such a simple action as a normal pass," Nagelsmann has said.
“The book is not completely closed, but there is no doubt it is going to be very tight, because we have to take into account not only the recent downtime, but also the previous period," Nagelsmann added.
