Friday night was supposed to be about a big win, but it quickly turned into something else. South Carolina Gamecocks shocked UConn Huskies with a strong 62-48 win in the Final Four.
It ended UConn’s long unbeaten run and sent South Carolina to the championship game. But just as the buzzer came close, all attention shifted to a tense moment on the court.Right after the game, head coaches Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley came face to face. What should have been a normal handshake turned into a heated exchange. Auriemma looked upset and started pointing and speaking loudly. Staley did not back down. Staff and officials quickly stepped in as the moment grew tense.
ESPN later showed the full sequence, and the clip spread fast online.

After the game, Staley looked confused about what caused the moment. Speaking to ESPN, she said, “I have no idea what happened. But I will tell you this, I am a person of integrity. If I did something wrong to Geno, I have no idea what I did. I guess he thought I didn’t shake his hand at the beginning of the game. But I went down there pre-game, shook everybody on his staff’s hand.
I don’t know what he came with after the game. But, hey, sometimes things get heated.
We move on.”Auriemma later explained his side. He said, “The protocol is, before the game, you meet at halfcourt. The two coaches meet and shake hands. I waited there for like three minutes.” However, ESPN replays showed Staley greeting UConn’s staff before tip-off, including Auriemma.Tension had already been building during the game. In a mid-game interview with ESPN, Auriemma said, “I’m not making excuses, because we haven’t been able to make a shot, but this is ridiculous.
Their coach rants and raves on the sideline and calls the referee some names you don’t want to hear.”There was also confusion over an incident with UConn player Sarah Strong. Auriemma suggested her jersey was pulled, but later replays showed she tore it herself. Strong later told reporters, “It was an accident. I missed my shot, ripped it by accident.”The moment quickly became a big talking point online. ESPN’s Stephen A Smith wrote, “That was some straight B.S.
from the great Geno Auriemma. Never thought I would see the day. Horrible look.” Analyst Skip Bayless also reacted, saying, “Then poor sport Geno got into it with Dawn. He looks so bad.”While the drama took over headlines, the result stayed clear. South Carolina now moves to the championship game, where they will face UCLA Bruins. For UConn, the night ended with both a tough loss and an unexpected scene that many are still talking about.
