Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shuffles leadership, CTO Andrew Bosworth to take charge of…

Meta is restructuring its internal AI strategy as it races to keep pace with other AI companies. According to an internal memo viewed by The Wall Street Journal, chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth has been asked to take over direct supervision of the company’s efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across its entire workforce. The report said that Bosworth, a long-time executive known within the company as “Boz,” will now lead the “AI For Work” initiative. He takes the reins from Guy Rosen, another top executive, in a move designed to make the social media giant more “nimble” and efficient. In his note to employees, Bosworth expressed optimism about the progress made so far.“As I’ve been digging in I’ve found we have a lot to be proud of. The early pilots, the willingness to pressure-test new ideas, and the speed at which we’ve enabled teams to embrace AI tools has created real momentum and sets us up for this next phase,” Bosworth said in the note.

From the Metaverse to AI

Bosworth is a Meta veteran, having joined the company back in 2006. Since becoming CTO in 2022, he has primarily been the face of the company’s Metaverse operations, overseeing the development of virtual and augmented reality hardware like the Quest headsets.Recently, Meta announced that it was pulling the plug on Horizon Worlds for VR but Bosworth said that Horizon Worlds for Quest will stick around for the “foreseeable future”.

Bosworth explained on an Instagram AMA that the community was adamant that they wanted to have access to Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest headsets.“We have decided, just today in fact, we will keep Horizon Worlds working in VR for existing games,” Bosworth said. He added that the Horizon Unity runtime games that currently exist will continue to operate in VR and won’t be ported to mobile platforms. “We will keep Horizon Worlds working in VR for existing games, to support the fans who've reached out. For people who already have games they like that they're using in Horizon Worlds, [they] will be able to download the Horizon Worlds app and use it in VR for the foreseeable future,” Bosworth said.
