West Asia Conflict: A drone, reportedly from Iran, struck near Dubai International Airport in the wee hours of Monday (local time), igniting a huge fire.

In videos widely circulated on social media platforms, a massive fire followed by thick plumes of smoke can be seen billowing after an aerial object, reportedly to be a drone, struck a fuel tank in the vicinity of Dubai International Airport (DXB).

Earlier, residents across parts of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, reported hearing loud explosions, with some saying smoke and flames could be seen rising near the airport.

The Dubai Media Office confirmed the incident, saying that a “drone incident" led to a fire in “the vicinity of Dubai International Airport."

Emergency and specialised response teams were rushed to the site and are implementing the necessary measures in line. The Media Office said that Civil Defence teams are currently working to bring the fire under control. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.

Flight Operations Hit

Meanwhile, an update on the flight tracking website Flight Radar showed that the flights to the Dubai International Airport are currently being held off amid the drone incident.

FlightRadar showed that at least five flights, bound to Dubai from Karachi, Kathmandu, Hanoi, Asmara and Amman are currently being held off at the airport.

The incident took place after Iran issued a warning to civilians in parts of Dubai and Doha, urging residents in certain areas to evacuate.

According to Iran’s Media Operations Center, people living in specific districts should leave immediately because those locations could be targeted within hours.

Iran’s state-affiliated broadcaster Press TV said Tehran believes United States military personnel are sheltering in those areas. Iranian officials have said this was the reason for putting civilians on notice that strikes could take place.

Earlier on Sunday, Iranian authorities issued a separate warning calling on people to evacuate areas close to the Middle East’s busiest port and two other port facilities in the UAE.
