A city council meeting in Texas’s Frisco escalated into a heated exchange between right-wing advocates and Indian-origin residents. Numerous individuals displaying right-wing symbols accused Indian-origin citizens of extensive H-1B visa fraud and an “Indian Takeover," while the latter group defended their presence as beneficial to the US city.
According to reports, the council meeting saw around a dozen individuals wearing America First hats, masks emblazoned with the symbol of the Marvel character — Punisher — and other US right-wing symbology.
The meeting, which took place on February 3, was called after social media conservative influencers, Kaylee Campbell and Marc Palasciano, urged disgruntled North Texans to attend the council meet and talk about the “massive takeover" of Indians in Frisco.
Notably, Frisco citizens did not attend the meeting, and the participants were from across North Texas, who came to rage against what they perceived as massive fraud being perpetrated in the H-1B visa programme, the Dallas Observer reported.
Indian-Origin Population On Rise In Frisco
Notably, the Indian-origin population in Frisco is continuously rising. According to a survey conducted by the city government, Indians and other Asians comprise 33 percent of Frisco’s population, up from 10 percent in 2010, India Today reported.
This rise in Indian households and the USCIS data suggesting that the Indian population is rising because of the fraud in H-1B visas is being used by the right-wing individuals to argue that fraud was taking place within the visa programme.
These allegations gained further credence after Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered a freeze on hiring H-1B professionals.
Meanwhile, an Indian-American, Shanthan Toodi, a US Army veteran who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was reported by The Dallas Morning News staing that he disagreed with activists framing the issue as an “Indian takeover". However, he argued that the perpetrators of H-1B fraud should be held accountable.
“When entire ethnic communities are spoken about as a problem…we stop talking about policy, and we start drifting into collective blame," Toodi said, adding that it hurt to have to defend his right to belong in the city.
Another Indian-American citizen, Muni Janagarajan, argued that the presence of Indians was a net benefit to the city of Frisco. “When we buy homes we are not just buying the real estate," Janagarajan said, adding “We are funding the world-class parks and Frisco ISD, one of the top-rated school districts in Texas that benefits every child in the city."
