A software engineer from Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal was arrested for allegedly developing a mobile loan application that was used to lure nearly five lakh people across India into an instant loan scam and dupe them of around Rs 200 crore.

A resident of Bhopal, the accused was identified as Kamil Siddique. According to investigators, he was arrested by the Nagpur Police Cyber Cell after an investigation in connection with a financial scam linked to the ‘Mast Money’ mobile app, India Today reported.

How The Scam Surfaced

Preliminary investigation suggests that Siddiqui allegedly developed the app, which was promoted on social media with promises of instant online loans of up to Rs 15,000. Lured by these advertisements, thousands of users downloaded the application and applied for loans, India Today reported.

Once the app was installed, the accused and his associated reportedly accessed users’ mobile phone data. Police say that the alleged scammers took control of the loan process and forced users into paying huge sums of money.

Two residents of Nagpur filed complaints with the Cyber Police, following which an investigation was initiated. With the help of technical evidence, the police tracked down the accused and arrested him from Bhopal.

At present, a probe is underway to identify whether there is a broader network operating behind the alleged scam involving Rs 200 crore.
