Former SportsCenter anchor Max McGee has spoken publicly for the first time since ESPN fired him in 2024 following a workplace investigation. In a video shared on Instagram, McGee said he still does not know the specific details of the complaint that led to his dismissal.

His comments come two years after The Athletic first reported that ESPN had received a complaint from a female employee before ending his employment.

Max McGee says ESPN never explained the complaint that led to his firing

McGee said people have been asking him what happened ever since he left ESPN. He explained that he could only share what he personally knows because he was never given a clear explanation.“The honest answer is that I can only tell you what I know. I was never provided specific details of the complaint that ultimately led to that decision.

I asked questions, I looked for answers, and I left that process with more uncertainty than clarity.”McGee did not discuss the nature of the complaint during the video. Instead, he spoke about how difficult the last two years have been after losing what he described as his dream job.“For the last two years, I’ve mostly stayed quiet. Not because I didn’t have anything to say, but because I was trying to do what I thought was the right thing.”

He added that he was not trying to attack anyone or ask for sympathy. According to McGee, he decided to speak now because staying silent allowed others to tell his story instead.

Max McGee reflects on life after ESPN and looks ahead

The former ESPN host admitted that the experience took a heavy emotional toll on him. He said he questioned himself, felt embarrassed and angry, and even wondered if he would ever return to television.“I’ve questioned myself. I’ve been angry, I’ve been embarrassed, I’ve been disappointed, and I’ve wondered whether I’d ever work in television again.”McGee also shared what he has learned from the experience. “But I’ve also learned something: You don’t always get closure. You don’t always get a perfect explanation. Sometimes all you can decide is whether you’re going to keep going.”He ended the video with a hopeful message. “This isn’t the end of my story, this is just a chapter of it.”McGee joined ESPN in January 2022 after building his career through local television, including a stint at Baltimore CBS affiliate WJZ-TV. His hiring was widely praised because of his journey from college dropout to a national sports anchor. The Athletic reported in 2024 that ESPN dismissed him after receiving a complaint from a female employee, but the network never publicly explained the outcome of its internal investigation.
