Oscar Piastri has reportedly emerged as the key figure in a potential Formula 1 driver market shake-up, with fresh reports claiming the McLaren star is considering activating a release clause in his contract.
If the Australian leaves at the end of the season, it could open the door for reigning world champion Max Verstappen to make a sensational move to McLaren. The reports come as questions continue to surround Verstappen’s long-term future at Red Bull. The Dutch driver has been linked with several teams in recent months after showing frustration with Red Bull’s struggles. While no deal has been confirmed, speculation over a blockbuster driver swap has gathered momentum ahead of the 2027 season.
Oscar Piastri’s reported McLaren exit could pave the way for Max Verstappen switch
According to reports from Brazil, Oscar Piastri is seriously considering using a clause in his McLaren contract that would allow him to leave after the current season. Such a decision could trigger one of the biggest driver changes Formula 1 has seen in years.
Piastri enjoyed a strong campaign before his title challenge faded during the second half of last season. Reports claim the relationship between the Australian and McLaren became strained after the Italian Grand Prix, where team orders favoured teammate Lando Norris.
That moment is believed to have left Piastri’s camp unhappy with his role inside the team.It has also been suggested that Piastri’s manager, former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, has been exploring other opportunities. Having experienced similar situations during his own racing career, Webber reportedly believes Piastri may struggle to become McLaren’s undisputed number-one driver while Norris remains at the team.
As a result, a move elsewhere could offer the Australian a better chance to fight for future championships. If Piastri decides to leave, McLaren would have an obvious opportunity to target Max Verstappen. The four-time world champion is widely regarded as the best driver on the current grid and has repeatedly been linked with an exit from Red Bull.Verstappen’s future has become a major talking point following Red Bull’s recent struggles.
Reports suggest the Dutchman has grown increasingly frustrated with the team’s performances and internal situation. Following his retirement at the British Grand Prix, Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, and manager Raymond Vermeulen were reportedly seen in an intense discussion with Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies, further adding to speculation.Paddock insiders also believe Verstappen has become disappointed with the team’s technical direction.
Reports claim some of his requested car setup changes were not implemented, leaving the reigning champion unhappy. A few weeks ago, Verstappen’s manager and Red Bull F1 CEO settled the rumors, calling them baseless. Meanwhile, reports claim McLaren would not hesitate to pursue Verstappen if he becomes available. The Woking-based team has built a reputation for making bold decisions when elite talent enters the market. For now, neither McLaren, Red Bull, Piastri nor Verstappen has commented on the speculation.
