Four-time world champion Max Verstappen stepping away from Formula One would be a major blow to the sport, according to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Max Verstappen, who dominated between 2021 and 2024, has recently voiced frustration with upcoming regulation changes and Red Bull’s dip in competitiveness.

The Dutch driver has been outspoken about the sweeping 2026 rule overhaul, particularly its focus on electric energy management and reduced speeds, even likening the sport’s direction to “Formula E on steroids" and “Mario Kart." His dissatisfaction has fuelled speculation about a possible early exit, despite being under contract until 2028.

Lando Norris & Oscar Piastri Reaction

Piastri acknowledged Verstappen’s stature and influence, saying, “I think it would be a big loss for the sport as a whole. I think for us as drivers we want to race against the best and try and prove ourselves against the best." He added that Verstappen has “shown his calibre in the last 10 years" and has been the benchmark “for the last five or six".

Norris echoed those sentiments, describing Verstappen as one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history. “It would be a shame for the sport, it would be a miss for the sport if that does happen, because he probably is one of the best drivers you’ll see in Formula One ever," said Norris. “He’s always been very open to say what he thinks, whether you agree or not."

However, Norris also believes Verstappen is unlikely to walk away soon, pointing to his ambition to secure a fifth world title. Max has earned the right to go and do whatever he wants," he added.

Will Max Walk Away?

While Verstappen has recently shown interest in endurance racing and spending more time with his family, at last month’s Japanese Grand Prix. His head has turned his attention to endurance racing too, even though his presence remains crucial to Formula One, both for the level of competition and its global appeal.
