Max Verstappen hopes the widespread criticism of F1’s new 2026 regulations will force the FIA and the sport’s leadership to take action following the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

What’s The Issue?

The new rules have brought about one of the biggest regulatory overhauls in F1 history — most evident, the sweeping changes introduced to both the chassis and the power units.

The redesigned engines now rely far more heavily on electric power, which has made battery management a central part of race strategy.

However, that shift has sparked significant controversy within the paddock.

Why Are Drivers Concerned?

Drivers have been forced to adopt unusual techniques — such as downshifting on straights to harvest energy — something many feel detracts from traditional F1 racing.

And Verstappen has undoubtedly been one of the most vocal critics.

During pre-season testing, the four-time world champion labelled the new regulations “anti-racing" and compared the experience to “Formula E on steroids."

Several other drivers share similar concerns.

Lando Norris described the Australian Grand Prix as chaotic and potentially dangerous, with drivers constantly swapping positions due to energy limitations, while Esteban Ocon said the new cars are simply “painful" to drive.

Verstappen Speaks His Mind

Verstappen hopes the collective criticism from drivers and fans will prompt the FIA and Formula 1 to reconsider aspects of the regulations.

“I love racing, but you can only take so much," the Red Bull driver said. “I think they’re willing to listen, the FIA and F1, but I just hope that there is some action because it’s not that I’m the only one saying it — a lot of people are speaking the same.

“If it’s drivers, fans, we just want the best for the sport. It’s not that we are critical just to be critical. We are critical for a reason; we want it to be Formula 1, you know, proper Formula 1 on steroids. Today, of course, again, that was not the case."
