Christians observed Good Friday with solemn prayers, fasting and religious processions to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

In Kolkata, devotees gathered at the Motherhouse of the Missionaries of Charity to offer prayers and take part in special services marking the solemnity of the day. The atmosphere remained contemplative as worshippers reflected on the suffering and death of Christ.

In Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, thousands joined the traditional ‘Way of the Cross’ procession, retracing the path believed to have been taken by Jesus on his way to Calvary. Participants carried crosses and chanted hymns, maintaining a reflective and respectful tone throughout the march.

The Way of the Cross, also known as the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis or Via Dolorosa), is a Catholic devotion consisting of 14 steps that honour the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Traditionally observed on Fridays during Lent, it involves meditating on key moments from Christ’s condemnation to his burial, allowing the faithful to spiritually accompany Him on His journey to Calvary.

In Delhi, devotees attended Good Friday services at churches including the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gol Dak Khana and St Thomas Church in RK Puram Sector 2, where prayers and readings from the Bible formed the core of the observances.

Good Friday, marked on the Friday before Easter, holds paramount significance for Christians worldwide, including those in India. It falls within Holy Week, which begins with Palm Sunday and culminates in Easter.

According to Christian belief, Good Friday commemorates the day Jesus was crucified by the Romans. He was betrayed by one of his disciples, Judas, which led to his arrest. Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Judea, ordered His execution. Jesus was made to carry His cross through Jerusalem to Calvary, the site of the crucifixion.
