Mayo Hospital HoD & steno held for Rs30,000 bribe demand

Nagpur: Head of the department (HoD) of surgery at Indira Gandhi Govt Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), also known as Mayo Hospital, and a stenographer were on Tuesday detained by the anti-corruption bureau sleuths for allegedly demanding a bribe of 30,000 from an assistant motor vehicle inspector (AMVI) posted at Wardha.

.The accused have been identified as Dr Nandkishore Jaiswal, HoD of surgery and chairperson of medical board, and Ashish Metekar, a stenographer, both attached to IGGMCH. The process of registering a formal case against the duo at Tehsil police station was underway at the time of going to the Press. Sources said searches were also being conducted in connection with the case.According to the complaint, the assistant motor vehicle inspector had been on medical leave for the past three months.

After rejoining duty, he was instructed to appear before the medical board at IGGMCH, Nagpur, for verification of his medical condition and to obtain the necessary recommendation and medical certificate covering the leave period.When the complainant approached the board, Dr Jaiswal and Metekar allegedly demanded ₹30,000 to issue the required certificate.Unwilling to pay the bribe, the AMVI lodged a complaint with ACB.,

which conducted verification proceedings. On June 24, both accused were caught on record demanding the bribe amount and even agreed to accept Rs20,000 after compromise negotiations. However, the duo refrained from accepting the money on the day of the trap.Acting promptly on the verified complaint, the ACB team detained the duo on Tuesday. The entire operation was conducted under superintendent of police, anti-corruption bureau, Digambar Pradhan, additional superintendents of police Vijay Mahulkar and Madhuri Baviskar.Sources stated the IGGMCH is set to communicate to the office of the commissioner of the medical education and drugs department (MEDT). The commissioner will then forward the report to chief secretary.
