As Mysuru, Karnataka prepares to observe Mahashivaratri, the city’s civic body has announced a one-day restriction affecting meat sales and slaughter activities. The decision, issued ahead of the festival, is part of standard administrative measures taken during major religious occasions in the city.
The order has been issued by the Mysuru City Corporation and applies across areas under its jurisdiction.
According to the official order, the sale of all types of meat has been prohibited within Mysuru city limits on the day of Mahashivaratri. The restriction also extends to the functioning of slaughterhouses, which will remain closed for the duration of the ban.
The order is applicable for one day only and is limited to the festival date.
Areas where the restriction applies
The ban covers all localities governed by the Mysuru City Corporation. This includes licensed meat stalls, retail outlets, and slaughterhouses operating within the municipal limits. Vendors functioning outside MCC limits are not covered under this specific order.
Civic officials have clarified that the restriction is not permanent and applies only for the specified day.
Reason cited by the Corporation
Officials said the decision has been taken in view of the religious significance of Mahashivaratri. The festival is widely observed by devotees across the city, and similar restrictions have been imposed in previous years to respect religious sentiments and maintain the sanctity of the occasion.
The Corporation described the move as a customary administrative practice rather than a new policy decision.
Enforcement and compliance
To ensure the order is followed, health inspectors and local enforcement staff have been instructed to conduct checks across the city. Inspections will focus on meat shops and slaughterhouse premises during the restricted period.
Civic authorities have warned that action will be taken against anyone found violating the ban. While the order does not specify the penalties in detail, officials said violations would be dealt with under existing municipal and public health regulations.
What residents and vendors should know
Residents planning purchases have been advised to take note of the one-day restriction. Meat vendors have also been asked to comply with the order and resume normal operations once the ban period ends.
With Mahashivaratri being widely observed in Mysuru, civic officials said the measure is aimed at ensuring smooth observance of the festival without disruptions or complaints.
