Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker came agonisingly close to gold in the women’s 25m sports pistol event at the ongoing Asian Championship in New Delhi, losing out by the narrowest of margins after a dramatic shoot-off at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range on Monday.

Bhaker and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Trang were inseparable at the end of the final, both finishing with 35 hits. With no separation possible on the main scoreboard, the contest spilled into a tie-breaker. It was there that Thuy Trang held her nerve, edging ahead with one additional hit to snatch the gold and deny the Indian star at the final hurdle.

Bhaker once again demonstrated her consistency on the big stage, but the difference between gold and silver ultimately came down to a single shot under shoot-off pressure.

India still had reason to celebrate. Esha Singh delivered a composed performance to claim the bronze medal, finishing with a score of 30.

Rhythm Sangwan, the other Indian finalist in the eight-woman field, narrowly missed out on the podium, placing fourth with 27 points after remaining in contention for much of the final.

For the Indian contingent, the Asian Championship is more than just a medal hunt. It is being viewed as a key preparatory platform ahead of upcoming international competitions, offering athletes a chance to test themselves against elite opposition under tournament pressure.
