MediaTek eyes automotive growth with Nvidia-partnered superchips

MediaTek is stepping up its push into new growth areas, with a sharper focus on automotive technology and high-performance computing, as it looks to reduce dependence on the smartphone market.

Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek India, said on Friday that while the company continues to lead in smartphones, tablets, TVs and Chromebooks, it is increasingly investing in emerging verticals with long-term potential. He pointed to automotive solutions and advanced computing as key focus areas beyond handsets.High-performance computing is a major priority for the chipmaker, backed by its collaboration with NVIDIA on the Grace Hopper Superchip, which targets advanced computing workloads.

Jain said such opportunities are likely to drive growth over the next few years. In India, the Taiwanese firm has expanded its portfolio with the launch of two new chipsets, Dimensity 9500s and Dimensity 8500, aimed at improving on-device AI, gaming and connectivity.

The processors add agentic AI capabilities and an “All-Big Core” design to support complex generative AI tasks. The Dimensity 9500s is built on a 3nm process with an octa-core CPU, while the Dimensity 8500 features an eighth-generation NPU and is based on a 4nm process. Jain said the semiconductor sector is seeing high levels of innovation and activity, particularly in chip development.
