Meghalaya hosts Indian Sailing League and North East Regatta at Umiam Lake, draws 280 plus sailors, boosts sports tourism and readies for 2027 National Games and future Olympics

Sailing at Umiam Lake (Special Arrangement)
In the span of ten days, a quiet reservoir on the outskirts of Shillong hosted over 280 sailors, including international competitors, two national-scale events, and a model of state-backed sports that is beginning to draw attention beyond the Northeast.
With the inaugural Indian Sailing League (ISL) followed immediately by the 4th North East Regatta, Meghalaya has made a case for how sporting events can be leveraged not just as standalone spectacles, but as instruments of infrastructure building.
Sailors Decent On Umiam

At the centre of this effort is Umiam Lake, where the state has steadily invested in developing the Orchid Water Sports Complex into a competition-ready venue.
The ISL, India’s first franchise-based sailing league, brought together 182 sailors, including 58 international participants from countries such as Russia, Korea, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, competing across Olympic and youth classes. With a prize pool exceeding INR 1.5 crore and participation from 14 franchise teams.
What followed was equally significant. Without a break, the North East Regatta, a Yachting Association of India (YAI) ranking event, drew over 100 sailors and served as a qualifier platform for national squads, including for events such as the Asian Games. The continuity of events allowed the state to maximise visibility for Umiam as a premier sailing destination.
Development Model For Meghalaya
Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, who inaugurated the league, framed the events within a broader developmental vision with an eye on the upcoming national and international sporting calendars.
“We want to tell everybody that Meghalaya has arrived. We are ready, and every activity we do is building up on that larger goal and purpose that we had in front of us," he said.
The state’s approach also appears to hinge on institutional partnerships. The ISL was organised in collaboration with the Umiam Sailing Club and the United De Novo Association of Yachting (UDAY), while the Regatta was conducted with the Yachting Association of India.
That support has drawn national attention. Admiral Karambir Singh, former Chief of Naval Staff and President of YAI, said at the ISL closing that the level of backing extended by Meghalaya was unmatched, while also noting the rapid transformation of Umiam into a premier sailing venue.
The Road Ahead
On the competitive front, the ISL saw Bhopal Tritons emerge as winners, followed by Vizag Vikings, with the home team Shillong Umiam Navigators securing a podium finish. The Regatta, meanwhile, saw strong performances from Indian and international sailors, including participants from Malaysia, underscoring the increasing global interest in the venue.
For Meghalaya, the timing is also strategic. With preparations underway for hosting the National Games in 2027, and ambitions linked to India’s 2036 Olympic bid, the state is using events like these as test cases not just for infrastructure, but for event management capacity.
