A Mexican trade association leader has lost his position after a video showing him making a racist gesture toward a South Korean influencer during a FIFA World Cup match sparked widespread outrage online.

The controversy began during South Korea’s Group A victory over the Czech Republic in Mexico, where South Korean content creator Yoon Su-jin, known online as ‘Incocat_t’, was filming herself celebrating in the stands. Yoon, who has built a large following across social media platforms, later shared footage that appeared to show a spectator seated behind her making a “slant-eye" gesture, a widely condemned stereotype directed at people of East Asian heritage.

The clip quickly gained traction online, prompting criticism from thousands of users who condemned the behaviour and called for accountability. Many social media users expressed support for Yoon, while others highlighted the broader issue of racism and discrimination that continues to surface at international sporting events.

Yoon also shared her reaction to the incident on social media, writing in Korean: “I came all the way to Mexico for the World Cup, but… am I being too sensitive?"

As the video spread, online users identified the individual as Ulises Fernando Bernal Miramontes, president of the Jalisco Association of Surveyors and Geomatics Engineers (CITGEJ). Mounting public pressure and criticism eventually led to his removal from the leadership role within the organisation.

Mexican’s Apology

In response to the backlash, Bernal released a public video statement apologising for his actions.

“I sincerely regret everything this situation has caused. I have taken time to reflect on what happened and I understand the responsibility I have in this moment," Bernal said in the video.

“I am not here to justify myself or to debate different interpretations. I am here to acknowledge that this situation has caused discomfort and to express my most sincere apologies in a clear and respectful manner."

Racism And Football

The incident has reignited discussions about racism in sport and the importance of creating an inclusive environment for supporters from all backgrounds. It also overshadowed what had otherwise been a positive atmosphere surrounding the tournament, where fans from different countries had been seen celebrating together throughout the opening week of competition.

South Korea opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic, while hosts Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0. The two teams are set to meet in Guadalajara on June 18.
