The Mexican government is willing to host Iran’s FIFA World Cup games, after the latter refused to play in the United States due to ongoing political skirmishes that have led to a full-blown war.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that her country would have ‘no problem’ hosting Iran’s World Cup games, provided FIFA approves a venue change.

Iran’s football federation has already approached FIFA to request that its games be shifted out of the United States, citing player safety concerns. The move comes amidst escalating regional tensions, including joint US-led air strikes, which have raised serious worries over security and logistical arrangements for the team.

Iran are all set to play their group-stage games across several cities in the United States under the tri-nation hosting model for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Beyond immediate security concerns, Iranian officials are wary of possible travel restrictions as well, visa problems and the wider political climate, all of which could affect the team’s preparation and participation in the tournament.

Mexico has now emerged as a potential alternative venue, with Sheinbaum’s remarks signalling the nation’s willingness to step in if FIFA opts to act on Iran’s request.

But shifting games at this stage would pose major logistical hurdles, as the FIFA World Cup schedule, venues, ticketing and broadcast arrangements have already been finalised, making any late changes complex and disruptive.

FIFA has yet to issue an official response.

The situation has raised fresh doubts over Iran’s participation in the tournament as well, with the possibility that the team could pull out of the FIFA World Cup altogether if their concerns remain unresolved.

With the 2026 edition all set to be the first FIFA World Cup hosted across three countries, the development underscores how global politics can intersect with sport.
