South Korea delivered the first comeback win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overturning a 1-0 deficit to beat Czech Republic 2-1 in their Group A opener.

They dominated the first half, with captain Son Heung-min leading their attacks, but failed to score before the break. Early in the second half, Czech captain Ladislav Krejci headed in from a long throw-in to give his side a 1-0 lead against the run of play.

South Korea responded eight minutes later when Hwang In-beom produced a composed solo effort to equalise. Tomas Soucek then briefly thought he had restored Czech Republic’s lead, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Almost immediately, Oh Hyeon-gyu struck from close range to complete the comeback and secure South Korea’s 2-1 victory.
