Michael Carrick opted for the diplomatic route on Friday, brushing aside criticism (more like an awkward jab) from former teammate Paul Scholes following Manchester United’s recent defeat.

Manchester United suffered a frustrating 2–1 loss to Newcastle United last month, marking Carrick’s first defeat since taking interim charge of the club in January.

The loss triggered a pointed reaction from Scholes on social media.

The United legend posted a message that appeared to mock both the result and his former midfield partner.

Scholes’ reaction raised eyebrows, given the history between the two. The pair shared the pitch 160 times for United between 2006 and 2013, forming part of one of the club’s most successful sides.

During that period, they helped United win five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

Scholes has previously expressed doubts about whether Carrick should take the United job permanently, so his criticism didn’t come as a complete surprise.

Carrick Keeps Calm

Speaking ahead of United’s next match, Carrick refused to escalate the situation.

“There’s nothing to say about it really," he told reporters.

“I think that’s just where we are in terms of social media and things and captions and quotes. It can be taken in different ways, so just be calm about it and understand the real meaning of things."

“Listen, there’s different opinions out there, and it’s fine. People can have different opinions."

United return to action on Sunday against Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery.

The clash could prove crucial in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification, with Villa level on points and separated from United only by goal difference.
