Michael Vick makes powerful head coach debut with Norfolk State and takes on Towson in home opener (Image Via Google)
Michael Vick takes to the sidelines. The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback makes his debut as head coach for the Norfolk State Spartans on Thursday at 7 p.m. Eastern, live on ESPNU at William “Dick” Price Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia.
This is Vick’s first season guiding a college team. He brings huge name recognition and hopes to lift the program after a 4–8 season last year. This game also marks Norfolk State’s first home opener since 2021 and it happens in front of his home-state fans.

Michael Vick steps into a tough but exciting role. He’s not just a coach, he’s a legend picked No. 1 in the 2001 NFL Draft who played in three Pro Bowls and changed the Falcons’ reputation nationwide. He said at a press event, “It’s football; same rules, same goals. But now, I hand over the keys.”
Michael Vick also shared his new motto: “I trust,” building on trust between players and staff. He praised running back Kevon King for his “explosive speed” and said quarterbacks Israel Carter and Otto Kuhns are pushing each other. On offense and defense, Vick brought in experienced coaches like defensive coordinator Terence Garvin and special teams leader Tory Woodbury to help shape the team’s direction.

Michael Vick faces rivalry and FBS matchups early in 2025
After his debut, Vick steps into back-to-back challenges. In Week 2, Norfolk State plays Virginia State University in a heated local rivalry. The following week, the Spartans face their first FBS opponent, Rutgers Scarlet Knights a big test of what Vick’s team can do. Later in the season, the Spartans face Hampton in the “Battle of the Bay.” That feels extra personal Vick’s wife went to Hampton, making the game a family affair. Adding to the drama, on October 30, 2025, Michael Vick’s Spartans will face off against DeSean Jackson’s Delaware State in a rare HBCU matchup at Lincoln Financial Field. Both former NFL teammates turned coaches will meet again on a big stage.
